Switzerland has a university alliance - these are the best universities in the country, comprising of 10 cantonal universities and 2 federal technological institutes. Founded in 1460, University of Basel is the oldest while the youngest, University of Lucerne, was opened in 2000.
Universities are scattered throughout Switzerland.
Basel, Lucerne, St. Gallen, Zurich and Swiss Federal Technology are located in the German part of the country; Universities of Berne and Fribourg in bilingual cantons. The universities of Geneva, Lausanne, Neuchâtel and the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology Lausanne are located in “Romandie”, the French part of the country. The University of Lugano is located in the canton of Ticino, the Italian part of the country.
